Haitian Kids Travel to America

Newspaper: Philadelphia Daily News
Article:"Kids From Haiti Fly Here for Care, as Local Pediatric-Medicine Teams Head There"
By: Kitty Caparella
Date: Feb.1, 2010

From reading this article, I was happy to know that there Haiti was able to have their first pediatric team. Not only do I like the idea of a pediatric team, but I also like the idea of children traveling to America for treatment. I also read that a health care organization (PIH) is willing to provide free health care for earthquake victims.

Internet In Your Car

Newspaper Title: NY Times
Article: C.E.S 2010: The Internet In Your Car
By: Sam Grobart and Erik Olsen
Date: January 7, 2010

This article was interested because it shows the new development of technology. Soon, Ford will be the first cars to have internet on their dashboards. It will give people the chance to check their twitter, check their car status, watch videos, and other incredible stuff. This article really didn't surprise me because technology is always developing. I can't wait to see the first Ford with this new technology!

Dr.Kopano: Senior Seminar Mtg

Today, we had a meeting. Our speakers were Dr. Kopano and Mr. Morgan. As a class, we shared our concerns about the Career Fair. Many interesting ideas were raised. One of my collegues, Jaime Green, constantly addressed some good issues and solutions to solve the issues. Dr. Kopano was very understanding and concerned. Mr. Morgan was helpful. He even scheduled times to meet with students regarding the Career Fair.
I think the Career Fair will be successful if the changes are made. I really wish that more vendors could travel to Morgan, but I understand that our budget is very low. One major change that I am really looking forward to is the cancellation of classes so that students can be more involved.

Obama's State of the Union

While watching the Obama SOTU speech, I was excited to hear some of the issues that were addressed:

Unemployment:

Obama said, "Jobs should be our main focus in 2010." I agree because if more jobs are created and hiring then many people, like myself will not be unemployed. This will have a positive effect on a large amount of people because it will help them with their financial struggles.

Health Insurance:

"It will give small businesses and uninsured Americans a chance to choose an affordable health care plan in a competitive market." -Obama

If this became effective, it will have a positive impact on many uninsured people. I am sure that millions of people, like myself can not afford health insurance. Therefore, this plan will make it easier for people to purchase it, instead of getting denied.

Government Spending:

During this discussion, Obama raised a very good point: "The effects of the recession put a $3 trillion hole in our budget. All of this was before I walked in the door." This was a truthful statement because the budget hole was created by our previous president, Bush. It was due to expensive prescription drug programs and two tax cuts. Obama listed steps that will take effect in 2011, in order to freeze the government spending. I think 2011 would give us ample amount of time to take any action necessary to reach this goal. Every one would appreciate this because we will no longer experience this budget hole.

What will happen next?

I am curious to know what will happen next. Many people think that Obama will be lenient and the stereotypical African American. The day that he was elected, I received many text messages. One of them said, "There's going to be a picnic in front of the White House. So bring your watermelon, liquor, and your own blunt." I thought it was funny just like the Carlos Mencia video. I didn't take it seriously because I think that Obama will make a change. However, there are some people who believe that the comments and video is a true description on how the government is going to be. There are many reasons why people think this way:
  1. They're ignorant
  2. Although this is just a stereotype for blacks, they're forgetting that he is part white
  3. They have nothing else better to do

Well, the only way to find out the truth is just to wait and see.

Obama Supporters

It's amazing how so many people are Obama supporters. No matter where I go, I see Obama shirts. I actually have one of my own. It has Obama and Martin Luther King. The caption underneath reads, The Dream Is Real. I recently discovered that there are Obama sneakers, such as Air Forces and Keds.

President-Elect

Yay! I'm glad that we (African Americans) have finally made history. On Nov. 4, 2008 I screamed when I heard the good news that Obama was going to be our next president. It felt like a dream. In fact, it was a dream; a dream that finally came true. Some people make jokes about how things are going to be different, now that a black person is going to be in office. One of these remarks were made on the Mind of Mencia Show
